Young Creatives Project Areas

 CatStrand Young Creatives offers a year-round programme of art related engagement and development opportunity, for young people aged 4-25 years from the Glenkens.

The Young Creatives programme is currently funded by the Holywood Trust  with support from the Heritage Lottery Fund, Creative Scotland, D&G Council and Film Hub Scotland. The programme is funded for core delivery over the next two years up to March 2023

The programme operates under three areas of delivery - Creative Sparks (5-11 years), Creative Skills (12-16) and Creative Careers (16-25).

Creative Sparks

Creative Sparks (5-11 years).sparking an early interest in the arts and creating a pathway for children and families to engage with the wider CatStrand activity.

Creative Skills

Creative Skills (12 -16 years)  a diverse programme of regular groups focusing on creative development in young peoples’ areas of interest.

Creating paid and unpaid opportunities to gain work experience in all aspects of the creative industries.

Open 7 days a week, the CatStrand in New Galloway offers a regular programme of Arts events including theatre, music and dance, plus fitness classes and other activities for all ages. Out licenses cafe is open 11am - 4pm daily forlight lunches, home baking and tea and coffee. The gift shop stocks a great range of locally produced crafts and gifts.

CatStrand Young Creatives is a Glenkens Community and Arts Trust project, part of their thriving Arts programme. GCAT was started in 2007 to bring artistic opportunities to the rural Glenkens, and has grown ever since. It now has two venues – the CatStrand in New Galloway and The Smiddy in Balmaclellan – and a range of community development projects, including Galloway Community Transport, the Glenkens Gazette and Connecting in Communities.

The Smiddy

The Smiddy in Balmaclellan is open for meeting hire and regular activity programme. Its fresh,, tranquil ambiences, plus excellent wifi, makes it an excellent location for meetingsfor up to 25 people. The smaller meeting room, for up to 8 people, can also be hired.
